| What IS a Beagle? You'd like a Beagle...maybe you had one as a kid or think they are cute and cuddly. You might've always known you wanted one or perhaps you only discovered the breed recently. In any case the first step towards a great relationship lasting 15 years or more is knowing what a Beagle truly..."is". A Beagle is a small compact HOUND...in particular a scenting hound that hunts via following it's very capable nose. They were not bred to be pets or couch lovers...tho they do excell at those things now. They were bred to run hares and rabbits over varying terrain. When considering a Beagle you are getting an athlete, a tireless hunter, a relentless pursuer of small fuzzy bunnies. Hard to picture? Well, try and do it anyhow...because being able to see this will help you avoid MANY potential pitfalls new Beagle owners may encounter. Beagles are prodigious runners, eaters, diggers, howlers, and wanderers. They aren't these things just to annoy folks...but rather by the design of man. These habits can lend themselves to good, FUN things owner and hound can enjoy, providing...the training and time is invested. Their nose is seemingly attached to their brain in such a way that one cannot work when the other is in full swing. What that means is when the hound is trailing something it wants...the brain switches off and the hound will not often hear, heed, or even acknowledge...it's owners wishes. They're food motivated which makes training easier...but other things harder. They love people and that can be great if you have frequent visitors, but not so great if you want a watchdog, or a dog that loves "only you". They also can express joy with their voices as well as other emotions. Great if you love the sound...not so great if you are not giving guidance on when it is and ISN'T appropriate to give voice. Beagles lose their homes at al alarming rate because of everything above, and of course other people given reasons. DON'T be one of those people that fails their dog. Be one who is informed, ready, and welcoming of EVERY aspect of your chosen breed. One who is commited for life to fostering that lifelong bond between family and Hound that is legendary and ancient. A Beagle "is" wonderful in the right home, with the right person or family. A Beagle "is" the reflection of everything YOU put into it...or don't.
